Chicago bans foie gras
The city of Chicago has banned the sale of foie gras. As AAFL points out, most of the response (blogosphere included, tsk, tsk Chicagoist) has been negative, to the tune of "Aren't there more important things this city council could be doing?" Let us be the first to say: "No, there are not." It's certainly more "important", if that is to mean good for the city, than the sweetheart deals and patronage jobs doled out as the council's usual business. It may not be as important, in aggregate social good, as past proposals to promote affordable housing set-asides, for example, but our dictatorial mayor has and will kill those proposals every time. Yeah, it's largely symbolic, but less so than recent council denunciations of the Iraq War and the USA Patriot Act. Fewer ducks and geese will suffer, thanks to some no doubt meat-loving Chicago politicians. That's definitely important enough.
